Here's an anecdote -
This was back in the late 80s, when I was growing up - in Bangalore.
India had just lost the Finals of a well fought [field] hockey match to Pakistan. We were all very disappointed by the loss, but it saddened me further to see a victory procession with waving Pakistani flags in the Muslim parts of the City.
Ofcourse, India is a secular country and more so the United States.. and you can cheer whoever you please..
But, If you chose to become a US Citizen, and US were in a battle with your country of Origin (let's narrow it down to Sports, to keep it less complicated), which country would you side? If I chose to side with my country of origin, it would make me a hypocrite, wouldn't it ?

Leo ...you are right, paid membership will drive away ...members who are selfish and got used to free food around ..Let them leave IV ...Paid member ship will stop enemies of immigration to think before posting or registering ..
Lets do it .. make it Paid membership ..This a noble cause ..IV is a non profit organization ..We need dollars to proceed ..
We have to target democrats more aggressively !!
You are right. Many organizations do this. Once they have reached a base, they stop free membership. But from what I understand, a lot of people still don't know about IV and we must make more attempts to spread the word. Many people just don't know or understand the concept of IV. When we want them to join, the get suspecious and cautious and stay away. The idea here is to reach more and more people. IV is better organized now than what it was before and as people start to realise, they will come forward. Remember, IV is a concept and a platform andwill always stay. people may come and go - there will always be people motivated at different levels.

Since you can study under H4 you cannot apply for F1 (My wife tried that already) :)
What if the spouse (H1B holder) has to leave the country for some reason, say for an year? Then how is the student supposed to maintain his/her status?
So, I don't think that is true. If you get admission as a full time student, then you should be eligible for F1. My husband did this successfully in 2001.

Since I did not set up the website, I am not sure how members and guests are counted, but I can tell you from my own experience that I log in when I have something to say or when I get prompted. So many times if I just come and quickly see what is new, I do not log in,....that might be lazy but I figure many do this, hence the number you see could be 300 members and 133 guests or so....
I see 136 members and 297 guests online! I wonder why guests have more tensions than members?

I thought EB2 vs EB3 is mainly determined by what your job requires.. You may have a Masters but if your JD does not require one, the company cannot file you on EB2.

The Admin Fixes letter campaign was a good initiative. But, the target date got moved twice, and now I dont even know when the end date is.
Thank you
Thanks Waldenpond, paskal, english_august!
As far as joining a state chapter, you don't need to have face to face meetings at all. We haven't had even ONE meeting in NORCAL in the last few months.
Several state chapter members have collected & mailed to us dozens of letters without meeting us even once.
When there is time to act, you don't have to worry about how far you live etc.
The joint efforts of SoCal & NorCal are an excellent example as well. Gsc999 from NorCal has been to SoCal once in a while to help them with a Diwali Mela or a Letters drive, and SoCal folks drove to San Jose for the rally in July 07, and drona from SoCal helped us organize a Diwali mela event in NorCal in 11/2007.
More recently, rinsuper from SoCal called up hundreds of IV members all over California, then mailed us a bunch of 50 letters she had personally collected!
If there is a will, there is a way. If you insist on having a local chapter, feel free to setup yourself. IV will be too happy to help you do it!
jnrajaan: Thank you for your critical feedback, it is useful.
Just a quick clarification. The time line extension for Admin fix letter campaigned was requested by various state chapter volunteers including myself, abhijit and others. The reason was the traction they were gaining after volunteering on the ground for few weeks. The idea was to leverage that instead of just ending the admin fix letter campaign on a fixed date.
Abhijit: yes, thanks to you and other highly motivated volunteers in California and other states we have been very successful in highlighting our issues to the necessary "powers that be." This is an ongoing effort and not an ad-hoc strategy. We will disclose further steps when necessary. If people want the low-down they need to be involved and go the grass root volunteer work
Fellow IVers hang-on in there. As someone said,"It is darkest before the dawn." The old members go and new members come in that is to be expected.
Let keep our focus on our mission
Cheers!
Thank you

Can your spouse work? ...yes
What will be her status if she uses EAD?.... GRAY area no one knows
What if you get GC first and some problem with your wifes petition?....Gray area no one knows
What if your wife is on F1 (got EAD and AP) and she graduates waiting for a long time for GC ..can she jump to another status ...Gray area..If yes any problem with her status...no one knows
Can you start business on EAD...GRAY area no one knows
Do you think they will allow you to travel on H1 all the time if you have AP... for some luck ones yes but for some others nope...they are forced to use AP..
Its much horrible after getting EAD and AP and waiting....
Well you will realize " Nothing is better than nonsense...interim state"
Its good to have EAD and AP but its not worth waiting for so long after you get them.
We were successful in bring in some change...why don't we work a little bit more to fix the system and get the GC faster..
"Jab Loha garam hein..tabhi kuch karneka hein...whatever...
All i want to state is lets continue...and dont give up until tere is improvement with the GC
How about waiting till after August 17th. We need to catch our breaths after such a GREAT task!!

I am married too, but i only said that there are other easier paths aswell.
Regarding working late, i am a fulltime employee with H1-B and never came to office before 10:00AM and stayed after 6:00PM and never ever worked weekends. Mine can be an exceptional case, but what iam saying is, your relationship with your manager is important. This can make a lot of difference in your lives.
As long as you deliver what is expected of you, you can even work 4 days a week and get paid for 40 hrs per week.
I don't know, if we are deviating from our main discussion agenda started by LogicLife.
--sri
I think we are deviating. But allow me to say this. The point that logiclife made VERY largely correct. The other point that you made just now is true as well. Your relationship with ur manager sort of defines how well you wud do. But then that makes ur h1b/Gc process "manager specific" ;). Plus you and I are lucky that we dont work long hours like some others, but the average H1B worker does. Like Logiclife said, it may not be coz the employer forces you to, but you do it anyway to make yourself more useful and avoid layoff issues. I am sure most of us at this stage are more worried about losing our jobs coz of H1/GC problems than actually finding jobs or having no savings.
Someone pointed up above that some say having a GC is better and some say having a Job is better. Here is what i think. If you have a GC atleast u can find another job even it takes 2-3 months. If ur on H1b you CANNOT. About the savings, well that is an individual thing. Some save more and enjoy a little less, some enjoy life more and save less.
About whether immigration is a right or a privilege. Right now i think it is more LUCK than either one.
